Holden Creek Gun Club
Hunting At Holden Creek
Holden Creek Gun Club is located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, in one of the last undeveloped and most historic areas on the East Coast. The club is on a farm that has been in Grayson's family for over a hundred years. Grayson and Dawn live in the large house on the property, where his grandparents and great grandparents lived before him.
At Holden Creek we are less formal than many hunt clubs. We treat our customers as we would our friends, because that is what most become. We can't promise limits, but we do guarantee to do everything to ensure your hunt is a pleasant and memorable one.
Accomodations
The main lodge is a converted barn built by Grayson's grandfather, and was also used as a schoolhouse, where his grandmother taught. It has been our goal to keep the rustic look and charm of a late 19th century hunting lodge, while providing all the modern conveniences of the 21st century. The lodge has a modern kitchen, central air and heat, a modern bath, 3 bedrooms, a sitting and dining area and a small library. The second smaller cottage, a converted 1897 one room schoolhouse has its own modern bath, kitchen, living room and bedroom. For more pictures of the lodge and grounds, click here.
Staff
We are very proud of our staff here at Holden Creek. The lodge, which is Dawn's domain, is staffed by Chef Bill Harrison, Maxine McCready and Jo Ann Johnson. No matter how bad a mess we leave in the morning the staff makes it disappear by lunch. Chef Bill can cook anything from the finest seafood or steaks to sea ducks and make them taste delicious. Our guides, Curtis Evans, Ronnie Marshall and Wilson Glen have over 125 years combined hunting and guiding experience. They are all excellent watermen and know the area intimately.
Hunting Grounds
We have about 1500 acres that we lease or own. It includes farm fields and woodlands, but the majority is marsh. We also hunt public waters and marsh. This year we will have approximately 30 blinds in a wide range of habitats to choose from: farm fields, a flooded impoundment, a farm pond, salt marsh ponds, creek and point blinds on both the Chesapeake Bay and the ocean side of the Eastern Shore. One of our boats is equipped with an Avery blind and we have portable blinds to take advantage of any opportunities which might present themselves.
Much of our hunting is done over handmade wood or cork decoys. Brant, Canada goose, snow geese, swan, puddle duck, diver, and sea duck rigs are all part of our equipment. We try to remain as flexible as possible and consider our hunter's preferences, the abundance of different species at the time and weather conditions when making the final decision on where we will hunt. Although we specialize in waterfowl, we also hunt dove, deer, and turkey and by next year may begin taking some fishing parties for trout, croaker, and striped bass. The Eastern Shore has a large, healthy deer herd and our turkey population is steadily growing. Our guides are expert deer and turkey hunters and many of our upland areas provide excellent habitat. We strive to maintain the atmosphere of the area's famous hunting clubs of the late 19th and 20th century. We hope you can step back in time with us and experience the same sights and sounds of the unspoiled marsh that your grandfather knew - the same sights and sounds that sportsmen have experienced for over a hundred and fifty years on the Chesapeake Bay.
